Setting options

The following are options which affect the operation of various parts of Kith and Kin Pro.

Sort children and marriages:

Kith and Kin Pro will automatically sort children in a family and marriages of a person by date if this option is set. If a birth date for a child has not been entered, the christening date will be used.

This setting can be overridden temporarily in the person and family data forms.

Marriage produces wife's alias:

When a person is identified as the mother of a family an alias is automatically generated comprising her married surname, her firstnames and the date of the marriage. This alias will not be removed automatically in the event that the mother is removed from the family.

Uppercase surnames:

With this option set, the "Surname" field in a person data form will convert all letters to upper-case. If you want to enter lower-case letters you must turn the option off. Upper-case is normally used for surnames to make it easier to identify the surname in reports.

This setting can be overridden temporarily in the person data form.

Show dates in person description:

Set this option if you want to see the birth (or christening) date of a person whenever his name appears.

Show dates in family description:

Set this option if you want to see the marriage date of a family whenever the family's description appears.

Show birth dates in family description:

Set this option if you want to see the birth (or christening) date of the parents whenever the family's description appears.

Make person deceased on death/burial:

Set this option to make the program automatically set the "Dead" flag to "true" when you enter any death or burial details for a person. The "Dead" flag can be changed manually as well.

Make new people deceased:

Set this option if you want the "Dead" flag set to "true" by default when you create a new person. Otherwise the flag will be set to "false".

Display full names in family rectangles:

Set this option if you want the family rectangles in the Tree Area to show the parents' full names. If this option is switched off only the parents' surnames will appear.

Display marriage year in family rectangles:

Set this option if you want the family rectangles in the Tree Area to show the marriage year.

Warn when editing query results:

Set this option if you want a warning message when you start editing the results in the Search Window.

Warn of clearing folder in Web pages:

Set this option if you want a warning message when the destination folder is about to be cleared when creating Web pages.

Warn when opening Notes Editor:

Set this option if you want a warning message when you try to open the Notes Editor but you are already editing the multi-line text field (such as notes in a person or family data form).

Confirm record deletion:

Set this option if you want a warning confirmation each time you try to delete something.

Confirm picture file deletion:

Several picture records in Kith and Kin Pro can reference the same full-sized image file in the \Pictures folder. Deleting one picture record along with the image file would make it impossible for the other picture records to open the same image file. Set this option if you want a warning confirmation each time you try to delete a picture record and image file.

Show hints:

Small, yellow text windows indicate the function of many of the controls (buttons, edit boxes, etc) used in Kith and Kin Pro when you place the mouse cursor over them. When you are familiar with the functions of these controls you may wish to turn this option off.

Reuse P/F codes automatically:

When you create a new person or family in Kith and Kin Pro, it is assigned the next available P or F code. When you delete people or families the unused P or F code again becomes available but will not be used unless you set this option. You can also select which P or F code to use for a new person or family by using "Edit | Re-use P/F code".

Check for updates automatically:

Kith and Kin Pro will check online for updates to the program every 15 days. Clear this option if you do not want the program to do that. You can also check for updates in the Help menu.

Scroll to selected layer:

Set this option to automatically scroll the Tree Area to a random family on the newly selected layer when you choose a different layer.

Snap to grid spacing:

Enter the spacing you require between the invisible horizontal grid lines in pixels. If the snap to grid option is in use, Kith and Kin Pro will align family rectangles in the Tree Area so that they are level horizontally.

Backup folder:

By default, database backups are stored in the "My documents\KKPro" folder. Click on the Browse button to select a different folder to store database backups.

Text file delimiter:

When exporting delimited text files, Kith and Kin Pro needs to know which character to use to separate each data field. Click on "Use tab" to use the tab character as the delimiter or enter an alternative character in the "Use other char" box (the "Use other char" option is selected automatically). A comma is a commonly used delimiter.
