The Timeline Window shows chronologically sorted dates from the currently selected families and from a database of historical events. You can add/edit/delete events in the selected timeline as well as adding additional timelines. This allows you to customise the timeline to suit the geographical area(s) that your ancestors lived in.
Editing timeline events
First, select the timeline you want to edit in the "Current timeline" list (see below).
When you make any changes to the timeline data, the panel around the event list will become highlighted using the "Dialog editing indicator" colour. This indicates that the data is currently being edited and has not yet been saved to the database. Click on the Update button to save the new data to the database, or the Undo button to cancel any changes made.
Jumping to a date in the events list:
You can quickly scroll the events list to a particular date by entering a date (it can be a partial date such as "1900") in the
"Jump to date" box. Click on the "Jump" button to the right of the box to scroll the events list to the first available date on or after the
requested date.
Editing an existing event:
Click on the event in the events list and it will appear in the "Edit date" and "Edit event" boxes below the list. Change the data in
these boxes and click on the "Update" button to save the changes to the database.
Deleting an existing event:
Click on the event in the events list. Click on the "Delete event" button to delete the event from the database.
Adding a new event:
Click on the "Add Event" button. A new, blank event will be added to the database. Add the new event data in the "Edit date" and
"Edit event" boxes below the events list and click on the "Update" button to save the changes to the database.
Importing events from an external file:
First, select or create the timeline you wish to import the events into. Then right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top
of the dialog and choose Import. Select the file and file type you wish to import and
click on "Open". You can import two different types of file, an old-style Kith and Kin (.TML) file or a specially
formatted text (.TXT) file.
Clearing all events from the current timeline:
Right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top of the dialog and choose Clear. This will remove every event from the
current timeline.
Editing timelines
You can add extra timelines to Kith and Kin Pro and historical events added to these are kept separate from each other.
Adding a new timeline:
Right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top of the dialog and choose New. You will be asked to give the new
timeline a name. The name must be unique. The new timeline will be selected automatically and you can then add events to it (see above).
Renaming a timeline:
Right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top of the dialog and choose Rename. You will be asked for a new name for the current
timeline. The name must be unique.
Copying a timeline:
You can make a copy of the current timeline, with all its events, creating a new timeline.
Right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top of the dialog and choose Copy. You will be asked for a new name to give to the
new timeline. The name must be unique.
Deleting a timeline:
Right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top of the dialog and choose Delete. This will delete the current timeline and all its
historical events. You cannot delete the Default UK timeline.
Exporting a timeline:
Right-click on the "Current timeline" panel at the top of the dialog and choose Export. This will create a
timeline text file with all of the historical events in the current timeline. Timeline text files can be imported
back into Kith and Kin Pro (see above).
Selecting the print/export timeline
You can select which timeline should be used for printing reports and exporting Web pages. Select the timeline to use from the "Current timeline" list and click on "Set as default". You can also select whether to include the historical events in the printed/exported timelines.
