Frequently asked questions

Q How do I add people to a family?
A To add a new person and have him linked as the father for a family, open the family's data form and click using the right mouse button on the "Father" box. This pops up a menu; select "Add". The same applies to adding a mother or children.

Q Why does the order of children in a family sometimes change after editing the family?
A If you have set the "Sort children and marriages" option in Preferences then Kith and Kin Pro will try to sort children into order of birth date. If some of the children have no birth/christening dates then the program will place them at the end of the list but cannot order them further. To ensure that the order does not change, enter an estimated date for where dates are missing, eg. EST ? ? 1800. You can also override the auto-sort feature temporarily while you arrange the children manually.

Q When I select families which have dated events, why do they not appear in the timeline window?
A Make sure that the dates have not been entered with an apostrophe in front of them, indicating that they are only to be treated as text.

Q How can I get reports printed which have dates without "?"s when part of a date is missing.
A Use one of the last 4 date formats as an output format in Preferences. These 4 formats are specifically designed for output, so although a person's birth date may have been entered as "? ? 1930" it will appear in reports as "1930". You can change the "Month names" and "Weekday names" values if you do not like the months/weekdays spelt out in full.

Q When I use "Search | Go to family" and click on a family from the list, the Tree Area does not scroll to the family.
A The family rectangle may have become "lost" outside the Tree Area. Use "Edit | Select all" and then "Edit | Move selection" to position the entire tree well within the Tree Area.
