Tutorial - Printing

This tutorial requires the sample database supplied with the program - use "File | Database | Open | Sample_V3"

Subjects: Setting page options, previewing a report, printing a report.

Kith and Kin Pro can print many different types of report and you can choose many different options to control how the reports are printed. You can also choose which fonts to use.

Click on the "Print" button on the button bar to open the report control form.

The report control form controls printing, print previewing exporting PDF files and printing to text files for every report available in Kith and Kin Pro except printing notes directly and printing the results of searches.

Setting page options

At the top of the report control form are the "Printer settings" and "Page settings" boxes. These tell you what the current settings are for your printer and for the page.

Let's change the paper orientation to landscape. Click on the "Page" button to open the "Page setup form".

First, select the unit of measure which you want to use at the bottom of the form; "Inches" or "mm".

Make sure that the "Page size" setting is correct for the paper you are using. If it is not, then click on the down arrow to the right of the "Page size" box to bring down the list of sizes. This is a list of all the paper sizes which your printer says it will support. If the size you are using is not in the list, select "User-defined size" and then enter the correct "Width" and "Height".

We want to print a report in landscape mode so click on the "Landscape" option in the "Orientation" box. Click on the "OK" button to close the form and go back to the report control form.

Let's print a descendant tree for person [P423]. Click on the "Descendant tree" tab. This brings the settings for descendant tree reports to the top of the stack.

Click on the "Root person code" box and type in "423". This is the person who we want to be at the root of the tree. If you don't know the code for the person you want, you can click on the "Select person" button to select a person from a list.

Before printing this report we will preview it on the screen.

Previewing a report

Kith and Kin Pro allows you to view reports on the screen instead of printing them onto paper. This is useful for making sure that the report is the way that you want it before committing it to paper.

With the descendant tree settings that we set above, click on the "Preview" button to see the first page of the report on the screen.

Depending on your paper size, there may be several pages in this report. Click on the "Next page" button to move through the pages one at a time. When you get to the last page click on the "First page" button to go back to the first page.

You will probably find the text a bit hard to read since it is so small. You can zoom in by dragging a marquee around the area of the page which you want to magnify. Place the mouse cursor just below the "D" in "Descendants of [P423] Robert HUNTER". Now hold down the left mouse button and drag the expanding dotted rectangle down and to the right until it looks like this:

Release the left mouse button and the preview page will expand so that only the part you selected is visible.

When the page is bigger than the area visible on the screen, you can use the scroll bars to move around the page.

To return to normal size you can either click the right mouse button repeatedly to zoom back out in small increments or click once on the "Whole page" button

Click on the "Close" button to end the preview function and return to the report control form.

Printing a report

If you were happy with the descendant tree report you can now print it out simply by clicking on the "Print" button
