Glossary
Kith and Kin Pro supports version 5.5 of the GEDCOM standard, as used by the majority of genealogy programs. The program also implements some enhancements to the standard which allows it to transfer Kith and Kin specific data and makes files it creates more likely to be read successfully by other programs.
Kith and Kin Pro will also create GEDCOM files which you can use for submissions to the LDS Ancestral File and for LDS Temple ordinance clearances. Kith and Kin Pro GEDCOM files are registered with the LDS Family History Department.
Enter a new name for the GEDCOM file which you wish to export and click on OK. You can now select several options which define how the GEDCOM file will be exported.
What to export:
All families:
Set this option to export all people and families from the current family tree.
Selected families:
Export only the currently highlighted families and the people who appear in them by setting this option.
One person:
When you have set all other options and clicked on the Ok button, you must then select a single person from the list for exporting.
Range of families:
Enter a "From" and "To" family code. All families with codes between these values and their related people will be exported.
Aliases:
Set this option if you want aliases included in the GEDCOM file. Some programs cannot import this information properly.
Sources:
Set this option if you want source references, source documents and source repositories included in the GEDCOM file. Only documents and repositories which are referenced by the exported people/families will be included.
Notes:
Set this option if you want person and family notes included in the GEDCOM file. Some data may be excluded by the privacy level setting.
Ref numbers:
Kith and Kin Pro will automatically create a REFN tag for each person and family. The value of the REFN tag is the P or F code (number only). This may be useful for some receiving programs. It should not normally be included if the destination is Kith and Kin Pro.
Non-GEDCOM user fields:
If the receiving system is Kith and Kin Pro you can also include user-defined fields which do not have an associated GEDCOM tag. Kith and Kin Pro will be able to read these fields but other programs will not. User-defined fields which do have an associated GEDCOM tag will always be included in the GEDCOM file.
Privacy level
Set the cutoff privacy level for notes and user-defined fields. Notes and fields with a privacy level above the one you set here will be ignored. For example, enter level 2 to include notes/fields with privacy levels 0, 1 and 2. A level 3 or 4 note or field would be excluded.
Keep births private:
Set this option to exclude birth/christening dates of people who are still alive, ie. their "Dead" flag is set to false.
Receiving system:
File:
This is the normal setting and should be used for transferring data to any system not mentioned below.
Kith and Kin Pro:
Use this setting if the GEDCOM file will be imported back into Kith and Kin Pro. This allows the program to include special data which can only be read by Kith and Kin Pro.
Ancestral File:
For submissions to the LDS Ancestral File. The Ancestral File is a lineage-linked file that is created from submissions offered by LDS users or patrons. The Ancestral File System uses sophisticated rules to match individuals so as to extend each pedigree line included in the new submissions. A patron can search the ancestral file for an ancestor and his or her extended pedigree. If found they can select the portion of the pedigree that they desire to be download to a GEDCOM format for inclusion into their own personal ancestral file.
TempleReady:
For submissions to the LDS TempleReady system for temple work requests. After clicking on the OK button you will be asked for additional information.
Character set:
Kith and Kin Pro will produce GEDCOM files using either the Windows ANSI or ANSEL character sets. The ANSEL set is more appropriate for non-English languages and should also be used to comply with GEDCOM V5.5. However, Windows ANSI is normally used for transferring data to most other Windows programs.
File information:
Enter optional copyright and notes which will be included in the GEDCOM file header.
Submitter information:
If you want to include your name, address and phone number enter them here. They will be output as part of the SUBM record. You must have an entry in the Name field.
Multiple files:
If the GEDCOM file becomes too big for the disk it is being written to, the program will prompt you to insert another blank disk and will repeat this as necessary until the entire GEDCOM output has been written. Subsequent files will be named <filename>.G00, <filename>.G01, etc, where <filename>.GED is the filename originally specified for output.
